Diversification: A Mother’s Recipe for Business Success
“I’m not looking back..”
…declares Usher, a mother of four who transformed her modest roadside shop. Through Street Business School’s Community-Based Entrepreneurship Training (CBT) program, this 48-year-old entrepreneur turned her struggling venture into a successful enterprise in just a few months!
Before the training, Usher’s small retail shop in her bustling community barely generated enough income to support her family. “I had been running my shop for quite some time, but I was still struggling to provide for my family. Business was not going well,” she recalls.
“At first, I thought there would be free money, but I later decided to stay until the end because I realized all the business knowledge I was gaining—at no cost.”
“The topic about saving was my best. I realized all the mistakes I had been making. I learned to stop wasting money,” she shares. The engaging teaching approach kept participants motivated: “We would win gifts whenever we answered questions, and this made most of the participants strive to understand and participate in the classes.”
With new knowledge and confidence, Usher took bold steps to expand her business. Understanding the importance of diversification, she now sells fried cassava chips, offers cold beverages from a newly purchased fridge, and even owns a cow to supply fresh milk to her community.
One of her biggest breakthroughs came from learning to separate her businesses and manage profits effectively. “I saw a big change after separating the business. I started keeping money for different items separate,” she explains. Today, Usher can better provide for her family and pay her children’s school fees. Looking ahead, she plans to expand further by opening a mobile money shop on her veranda, utilizing previously unused space.
The impact of Street Business School extends beyond her own success story. “I see a big difference in the community. Many people have started businesses, and women have improved their lives.”
“Street Business School has changed our lives.”
